te chair
part of アドバンスドデザイン(advanced design), a class at kyoto university of the arts.
two almost identical parts are intertwining but not touching each other, only held together with pieces of rope. tensional integrity built through this composition makes it possible to sit on the chair, while its upper piece looks like it is floating in the air.
further the whole structure is moveable, which gives the chair a medical aspect – like a balanceball would do. it strengthes the user‘s back during being productive or relaxing.
the chair was built both by modern manufacturing like CNC milling, but also traditional handcrafted wood joineries. the tension is adjustable with rigging screws.the chair was built both by modern manufacturing like CNC milling, but also traditional handcrafted wood joineries. the tension is adjustable with rigging screws.
named after the english word tensegrity, the term of the above explained mechanical structure. this piece is the first prototype.
it is now displayed at kyoto university of the arts.
